THIS WEEK'S THROUGH-LINE
Get yourself moving first. Then go do the thing.

Welcome Note

Thanks for reading the thirtieth issue of The Advantage. Two firsts this week. Episode one of the podcast is live, and we have our first sponsor!!!

The thread running through the whole issue is charge. Getting yourself moving, then doing the thing.

My first guest is Daniel Berk, who built beehiiv's go-to-market from nothing (coincidentally, beehiiv is the platform we use to send you The Advantage) and has a way of framing the first dollar of revenue that I have not stopped thinking about since we recorded it. Then in the Practical Edge, the three words I say out loud every single morning before my feet hit the floor, and the research showing why they work. Let's get into it.

THIS ISSUE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Proppel

Let's fucking go! I cannot thank Proppel enough for betting on The Advantage as our first sponsor. That bet is what lets us build this properly, with a real team behind it.

I am genuinely fired up about this one, because it is a category I have lived in. I have hired well over several hundred international employees across my companies. Philippines, South Africa, Poland, and now Latin America. Building a team across the world does two things at once. It saves you serious money, and it gives you access to top talent you were never going to find in your own zip code.

LATAM has become my favorite of all of them, for one reason. The time zone. When you are building something early and you need your whole team on a call at 10am, that matters more than almost anything else.

Proppel is a recruiting firm built around LATAM talent, with US placement as well, and they are excellent at marketing and operations roles. We use them. They only get paid on success, so if they do not find you someone you are excited to hire, you pay nothing. Every hire carries a 90-day guarantee, and Advantage readers get 10% off their first one.

Their free guide is the closest thing I have seen to everything I learned the hard way over several hundred hires, written down in one place. It is the best resource on this I have read, and it costs you nothing. If you have ever even considered building a team overseas, start here. Hit the button, then scroll down for the guide.

WORTH WATCHING:

The First Dollar Changes Everything

Watch: Mike Wystrach and Daniel Berk on The Advantage

The Advantage · Mike Wystrach × Daniel Berk · ~53 min

This week's Worth Watching is different. It is the first episode of The Advantage podcast, two months in the making and one of my 50 goals finally crossed off. My guest is Daniel Berk, the first go-to-market hire at beehiiv and the guy who helped take it from roughly $600,000 in revenue and twelve employees to a reported $30 million in ARR. He has since left to bet on himself, and he now hosts MoneyWise, runs a local media company with his wife, and is shipping products of his own. We have nine episodes recorded already. Tell me what you think, the good and the constructive.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT IT:

The idea I keep coming back to is his framing of the first dollar. Not the first million. The first dollar. Daniel says he can help anyone make one online today, on any subject, with any skill set, and that the moment a stranger you will never meet pays you, something permanent changes in how you see yourself. Then you go do it again. He is right. The gap between zero and one is not a numbers problem. It is an identity problem.

The second idea is the inversion he is living. The old way was product first, then build the marketing machine. Daniel builds the audience first and then builds the product for the people already listening. That order is cheaper, faster, and available to anyone with a phone.

THE LINE THAT STUCK
"They find one thing that someone buys, and they do it a million times."
MY 20-SECOND RECAP
if you do not have the full 53 minutes

→Get to one dollar, not one million. The first stranger who pays you rewires what you believe is possible. Everything after that is repetition at scale. Stop designing the billion dollar idea and go earn a dollar.

→Build the audience before the product. Newsletters, podcasts, and short form now cost almost nothing and require almost no expertise. An audience of 20,000 in your own zip code is a launchpad for any business you want to open next.

→Reps beat brilliance. Roughly 90% of podcasts never reach 20 episodes. Daniel and his co-host recorded 60 straight weeks and brought a studio on vacation to keep the streak. The people who win are mostly the people still in the game.

→Know your threshold number. On MoneyWise he keeps meeting people whose life changed at the first small exit, not the enormous one. Figure out the number that actually ends the wanting, because it is usually far lower than the scoreboard suggests.

→Worst case is not that bad. He turned down a $300,000 salary to go out on his own, reasoning that failure meant getting a job again in twelve months. Name your real downside out loud. It is usually survivable, and saying it is what unlocks the bet.

PRO MOVE

Set a 90-day goal to earn your first dollar of revenue from something you made. If you are already a founder and you cleared that bar years ago, congratulations, no homework for you. If you are not a founder yet, this is the whole assignment. Take one thing you already know how to do, put it online, and get one stranger to pay you for it.
